Spring is finally here! With Summer just around the corner, your AC system will need a little TLC to ensure it efficiently cools your home in the hot Summer months to come. We encourage homeowners to follow this five step Spring air conditioning maintenance checklist to prepare your cooling system for the Summer heat!

1. Do an AC test run

Since the warmer temps just got here, not many homeowners have prioritized getting their HVAC system prepped for Spring, let alone Summer. If you haven’t already, turn on your AC system and take it for a test run! Being proactive and checking out your AC system early for any issues is key so it doesn’t become an emergency on that 90 degree Summer day.

Steps for your AC Test Run:

  • Turn on your AC
  • Check your outdoor unit to make sure the fan is running
  • Make sure all of your indoor vents are blowing cool air
  • Let the system run for an hour or so

2. Change the air filter

This is one of the easiest tasks you can do to keep your HVAC unit running at peak efficiency. Spring is the perfect time of the year to change out your air filter since your system has likely been working hard throughout the previous winter months. When you change the old filters with new, clean ones there is no dirt or dust coming back into your home. This allows your system to work more efficiently and gives you and your family cleaner air to breathe.

3. Inspect all pipe insulation and condensate lines

Any damaged insulation should be replaced to ensure your system continues running at optimal efficiency. A condensate line, which is the small dripping line coming from your HVAC unit, can cause drainage issues in your home if it is not working properly. Inspecting this line can save you from higher utility bills and damage to your home. This is also something our technicians check during our Preventative Spring AC Maintenance.

4. Clean around the outdoor unit

It’s likely that you will have some debris collected around the base of your outdoor unit over the past few months. It’s important to keep the area around your unit clean. Keeping pollen, dirt, dust and debris clear around your unit will save you money on repair costs in the long run, as well as improve your general air quality. As you landscape your yard for the Spring, be sure to cut your lawn away from your unit while keeping grass and leaf piles away from the system, as well as trim back vegetation and branches within a minimum of 2 feet around the unit.

5. Clean all vents and registers

Keeping the airways clean from dust and other particles that build up inside your home, such as pet dander and dust, helps to improve overall efficiency and keeps the air in your home clean.

And lastly…
